Introduction:

Sfumato Art Magazine is pleased to announce the Open Call for Issue 03, marking a new chapter in the magazine’s editorial and curatorial development.

Following the success of previous issues featuring artists from across the globe, Issue 03 introduces a strengthened curatorial structure, bringing together guest curators and the Sfumato editorial team to present a carefully selected selection of contemporary artistic practices.

Sfumato is committed to supporting artists at different stages of their careers and providing a thoughtful platform where diverse visual languages, perspectives, and mediums can coexist. Each issue is conceived as a space for dialogue, visibility, and professional presentation—both in print and online.

Curatorial Structure — Issue 03

Issue 03 is a non-thematic issue and will be curated based on artistic quality, conceptual clarity, and contemporary relevance.

This edition will feature:

Two Guest-Curated Sections
- Figurative Practices
- Abstract & Non-Representational Practices
Additional Editorial Sections led by the Sfumato team, dedicated to:
- Photography
- Sculpture & Installation
- Digital, Interdisciplinary & Contemporary Practices

Artists are invited to submit works across all mediums. Selected works may be placed in the section deemed most appropriate by the curatorial and editorial team.

What Selected Artists Receive

Artists selected for Issue 03 will receive:

A professionally designed feature in the printed magazine
Dedicated space for artwork presentation and artist information
Inclusion in the official digital edition of the magazine
International visibility through Sfumato’s website and social media platforms

A limited number of artists may also be invited for editorial features or interviews as part of the issue.

The magazine will be produced in high-quality print and distributed internationally through trusted print-on-demand platforms such as Blurb or Lulu, ensuring worldwide accessibility with affordable shipping options.

Eligibility:

Open to artists worldwide
Applicants must be 18 years or older
All career stages are welcome

Accepted Mediums

All visual art forms are welcome, including but not limited to:

Painting & Drawing
Photography
Sculpture & Installation
Digital & New Media
Mixed Media, Collage, Fiber, Ceramics, Prints

Submission Guidelines:

Submit 3–5 high-quality images
Images must be minimum 800 px on the longest side (300 DPI recommended)
For sculptural or three-dimensional works, multiple angles are encouraged
Each image should be clearly labeled with:
Artist name
Artwork title
Medium
Dimensions
Year

Artist information:

Artist Bio: up to 150 words (third person)
Artist Statement: optional, up to 300 words
Files must not exceed 10 MB

Fees:

Submission Fee: $8 USD (non-refundable, paid at submission)
Publication Fee (upon acceptance only): $29 USD
The submission fee supports administrative processing and curatorial review.
The publication fee contributes to design, production, publishing, and promotion costs.

Important Dates

Submission Deadline: March 20, 2026, at 12 AM EST.
Selection Notifications: Within approximately 1 week after the deadline.
Magazine Publication Date: May 10, 2026

Meet the Guest Curators

Issue III of Sfumato Art Magazine is curated in collaboration with invited guest curators from the international art community. Each brings a distinct perspective to the selection process, working alongside the Sfumato editorial team to shape a thoughtful and diverse issue.

Abstract & Non-Representational Practices

Marie-José Robinson Kafri

Marie-José brings a curatorial and editorial perspective grounded in scholarship and shaped through lived artistic and pedagogical practice. Her doctoral research at the Université de Montréal examined savoir-être—the embodied, relational, and ethical dimensions of artistic knowledge—alongside technical mastery in the teaching and transmission of the arts, a framework that continues to inform her approach to critical inquiry and artist selection. She holds a Master’s degree in Art Didactics and completed advanced training in performance and movement at the Banff School of Fine Arts. Her curatorial work spans contemporary visual art, performance, and interdisciplinary projects across North America and Europe, developed in dialogue with universities, cultural organizations, and international artists. She is particularly drawn to abstract and avant-garde practices that challenge dominant frameworks and expand how art is made and encountered. Alongside her curatorial work, she has had an extensive international career as a professional dancer, choreographer, and university-level educator, and has previously collaborated with Sfumato Art Magazine.

Figurative Practices

Carla E. Reyes

Carla E. Reyes is a mixed-media artist and curator based in Brighton, UK, originally from New York City. Her curatorial practice explores how figuration and narrative can emerge through materials, process, and physical engagement, blending direct and suggested representations of the body. Carla has co-curated Motherland and Return to Motherland at Yashar Gallery, Brooklyn, NYC, and is a participating member of the BWA Link Collective, supporting women artists in Brighton, UK. Her work has appeared in Sfumato Art Magazine, Kolaj Magazine, Uppercase, New Visionary Magazine, and Artist Mother Proud & Serious. She has participated in residencies with Kolaj Institute, Alterwork Studios, and the National Park Service, and holds an MFA in Painting from CUNY Lehman College, NYC.
