The Rhythm of Renewal

Curatorial Statement

The Rhythm of Renewal brings together the work of Lindsey Mctavish and Kimberly Atwood, two artists who explore renewal and resilience through distinctly different yet complementary approaches. Mctavish finds inspiration in the quiet rhythms of nature, while Atwood embraces the energy, movement, and fluidity of life. Together, their works consider how moments of connection, reflection, and creative expression can become sources of restoration and strength.

Working with hand-felted and quilted wool and silk, Mctavish translates encounters with the natural world into tactile and luminous compositions. Rather than directly depicting landscapes, she captures their emotional essence—the shifting light, the stillness of water, the quiet after movement, and the grounding presence of the land. Her slow and deliberate process mirrors the meditative quality of the works themselves, inviting viewers to pause, breathe, and reconnect with what feels essential.
Atwood approaches renewal through vibrant abstract expressionism, drawing from the fluidity of life and her transformative relationship with the ocean. Her paintings celebrate strength, recovery, and the courage to embrace change. Through energetic color, expressive marks, text, and symbols, she creates personal sanctuaries where resilience becomes something to be felt, celebrated, and shared.
Though their materials, processes, and visual languages differ, both artists recognize art as a space for restoration. Mctavish creates moments of quiet reflection, while Atwood channels movement and vitality into expansive expressions of possibility. Their works meet in the belief that renewal is not a single moment, but an ongoing rhythm—one that allows us to pause, recover, move forward, and reconnect with the forces that sustain us.
Together, The Rhythm of Renewal invites viewers to consider the many forms that resilience can take and to find, within color, texture, nature, and movement, a reminder that renewal is always possible.

ABOUT Lindsey Mctavish

Lindsey Mctavish is a Canadian contemporary fibre artist based in Nelson, British Columbia. Working primarily with hand-felted and quilted wool & silk, she creates richly textured landscapes that explore memory, emotion and our relationship with the natural world. Mctavish’s work moves between representation and abstraction, using layers of fibre, saturated colour and stitched line to capture not simply the appearance of a place, but the experience of being within it.

Her practice is rooted in an intuitive and tactile process in which landscape becomes a means of exploring change, connection and the passage of time. Her work has been exhibited and featured in contemporary art exhibitions and publications across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe. Mctavish lives and works between Nelson, British Columbia, and a small island in Bayfield inlet on Georgian Bay, Ontario. The distinctive landscape of Georgian Bay, famously depicted by the Group of Seven, has been a defining source of inspiration throughout her life.

About

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work begins with landscape, but it is rarely only about the landscape. For much of my life, Georgian Bay has been at the centre of my work. I spend part of each year on a small island in Bayfield inlet, surrounded by water, rock, changing skies and the constantly shifting light of the bay. It is a place I return to again and again, and one that has shaped the way I see colour, weather, and the natural world. Over time, I’ve become interested in how a place becomes inseparable from what happened there how light, weather, colour and the changing seasons become part of our memory of a particular moment. Working with hand-felted and quilted wool and silk, I build each piece slowly, layering colour and fibre until the landscape begins to emerge. I am drawn to the unpredictability of the materials and the way the fibres move and resist being completely controlled. The process allows me to work somewhere between observation and memory, letting a landscape become less about an exact place and more about how it felt to be there. The works in this exhibition move through moments of intensity and stillness, uncertainty and change. Some feel expansive and joyful; others carry the weight of something approaching or something already passed. The titles We knew it wouldn’t last, Everything changed after that, we stayed until sunset, We could feel it coming, It was quiet after that - Suggest fragments of a larger story without revealing exactly what happened.
For me, Nature is a constant reminder that nothing remains fixed. Weather changes, light disappears, seasons turn, and what seems lost returns in another form. These landscapes are about noticing those moments, and about the strange, beautiful way we carry them with us.

ABOUT Kimberly Atwood

Kimberly Atwood is an American contemporary artist and film producer whose work explores emotional memory, identity, abandonment, resilience, and personal transformation through text-driven abstraction. Working primarily with acrylic, pastel, raw canvas, and bold color fields, Atwood creates emotionally charged pieces that blur the line between confession, confrontation, and visual poetry. After decades spent building a career in film and media, Atwood turned more fully toward painting as both language and reckoning. Her work often incorporates stark handwritten or stenciled phrases layered over expressive surfaces, using simplicity and repetition to expose complex emotional states. Themes of grief, longing, visibility, reinvention, and feminine agency recur throughout her practice. Her evolving bodies of work — including the “UN” series and emotionally declarative paintings such as YOU HURT ME, UNheard, and The Horse — reflect a raw but intentional visual language that balances vulnerability with force. Influenced as much by personal history as by contemporary culture, Atwood’s paintings reject perfection in favor of emotional truth. Atwood’s artistic practice exists alongside her work in film production and creative development, where she has spent years building projects across entertainment, sports, and media. Her work represents a late-career emergence into fine art, rooted in the belief that reinvention itself can become a medium.

About

ARTIST STATEMENT

Kimberly Atwood creates from the intersection of endurance and beauty. Her work translates the unseen grief, illness, and resilience into color and motion. Each piece is both confession and reclamation: evidence that the human spirit can fracture and still generate light. Atwood’s art is deeply personal yet universal, rooted in a lifetime of navigating love, loss, and the quiet strength that follows survival. She paints not to escape the world, but to tell the truth of it, to remind others that healing is messy, that courage is often quiet, and that beauty still belongs to those who have suffered.
