Symbolic Realism presents more than four decades of artistic research by Albanian artist Sokol Sinani, tracing his journey from his earliest drawings and self-portraits in the 1980s to his contemporary paintings and monumental sacred works.
The book explores the development of Sinani's personal artistic language, which he defines as Symbolic Realism—a figurative approach in which reality becomes a vehicle for psychological, spiritual, and symbolic meaning. Through paintings, drawings, archival photographs, murals, personal reflections, and critical texts, the publication reveals the continuity of an artistic practice shaped by observation, imagination, cultural memory, and an enduring search for identity.
From early works created during the final years of Albania's communist regime to his later explorations of the human figure, symbolism, sacred imagery, and psychological space, the book offers an intimate view of an artist who has spent more than forty years developing an independent visual language.
This monograph is both a documentation of Sinani's artistic journey and an introduction to the ideas that continue to define his practice today.
Sokol Sinani is an Albanian figurative artist whose practice spans more than four decades. Beginning his artistic journey in the 1980s, he developed an early interest in combining observation, imagination, symbolism, and psychological expression. His formative years coincided with the final period of Albania's communist regime, when artistic practice was largely restricted to Socialist Realism. In 1989, Sinani achieved first place among approximately 700 candidates in the competition for admission to the Academy of Fine Arts, marking an important milestone in his early development. His subsequent practice expanded across painting, drawing, portraiture, monumental mural painting, and sacred art. Throughout his career, Sinani has pursued an independent figurative language moving between realism, symbolism, expressionism, and psychological surrealism. After decades of artistic exploration, he defines this language as Symbolic Realism—a personal approach in which the human figure and elements of reality become carriers of psychological, spiritual, and universal meaning.
His body of work includes paintings created in the 1980s and 1990s, monumental church murals, symbolic compositions, and recent works that continue to develop his visual vocabulary. Recurring elements such as the figure, shadow, mannequin, flower, eye, and architectural space form an interconnected symbolic system through which Sinani examines memory, identity, existence, spirituality, and the human condition.

"Working on Sokol Sinani's artist book has been an opportunity to look closely at a practice developed continuously over more than forty years. Our approach was to create more than a collection of artworks: we wanted the publication to function as a visual and documentary record of the artist's journey. As designers and curators, we approached the book in the spirit of a museum-style monograph, allowing the artworks to remain at the center while creating a clear narrative between the artist's early experiments, historical works, monumental murals, symbolic paintings, and contemporary practice. We also incorporated archival photographs, personal statements, documentary material, and professional critical writing to provide context for the evolution of Sinani's artistic language. One of the most compelling aspects of the project was seeing how many of the ideas present in Sinani's earliest works continue to appear in his recent paintings. Across changing periods and subjects, there is a consistent search for an individual language—one that transforms visible reality into a space for psychological and symbolic exploration. We are pleased to present Sokol Sinani: Symbolic Realism as a lasting record of this artistic journey and as an invitation to discover an artist whose practice continues to evolve through an intensely personal relationship with figure, memory, symbolism, and imagination."
