Jesús Torres Alfonso

Jesús Torres Alfonso, professionally known as Zaplaflora, is a Cuban-American artist whose work explores the spiritual, ecological, and emotional connections between humanity and nature. Born in Cuba in 1960, he began creating art in childhood, inspired by the vibrant landscapes and biodiversity of the Caribbean. After graduating as an engineer in 1984 and studying painting in Havana, he emigrated to the United States in 1997 and established his artistic practice in Miami. Over more than five decades, Zaplaflora has developed a distinctive visual language characterized by vivid colors, symbolic imagery, and surreal compositions that celebrate nature's beauty and mystery. His work has been exhibited internationally in the United States, Spain, Italy, Mexico, and Venezuela, and was featured in the 2022 Florida Biennial at the Art and Culture Center in Hollywood, Florida. He has received numerous international awards, including multiple Popular Vote Awards and Curator's Awards from New York People and Paintings Gallery, as well as recognition from the Italian gallery Masters of Art and the Association of World Artists.

Through his imaginative and deeply personal paintings, Zaplaflora invites viewers to reflect on the interconnectedness of life, the importance of ecological balance, and the transformative power of art.

Solo Exhibition — Where Nature Dreams: The Mystical Worlds of Zaplaflora
By Sfumato

Nature is not merely a subject in the paintings of Zaplaflora—it is a living presence, a spiritual force, and an endless source of wonder. In Where Nature Dreams: The Mystical Worlds of Zaplaflora, viewers are invited into a universe where reality and imagination intertwine, where flora and fauna become symbols of transformation, and where the visible world reveals hidden dimensions of meaning. For more than fifty years, Jesús Torres Alfonso, known as Zaplaflora, has cultivated a singular artistic language rooted in the landscapes and spiritual traditions of his native Cuba. Drawing inspiration from nature's abundance and complexity, he creates paintings that transcend representation, transforming natural forms into poetic visions charged with symbolism, movement, and emotion.

His works emerge from an intensely personal creative process. Rather than reproducing existing images, Zaplaflora relies on intuition, memory, and imagination to construct compositions that feel both familiar and otherworldly. Brilliant colors, intricate patterns, and fluid forms coexist in harmonious balance, creating visual experiences that encourage contemplation and discovery.

Throughout the exhibition, viewers encounter recurring themes that define the artist's practice: the sacred connection between humanity and nature, the search for emotional and psychological equilibrium, and the urgent need to preserve ecological balance. These concerns are expressed not through direct narratives but through symbolic landscapes and dreamlike environments that invite multiple interpretations. The influence of great masters such as Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Pablo Picasso, Wifredo Lam, Manuel Mendive, René Portocarrero, and Amelia Peláez can be sensed throughout his work. Yet Zaplaflora's artistic voice remains unmistakably his own. His compositions possess a spontaneity and freshness that resist convention, allowing intuition to guide the formation of shapes, symbols, and visual rhythms. What makes these paintings particularly compelling is their ability to operate simultaneously on emotional, sensory, and spiritual levels. They celebrate the vitality of life while encouraging viewers to engage with deeper questions about existence, consciousness, and our relationship with the natural world. Light and shadow, movement and stillness, reality and fantasy merge to create environments where imagination can roam freely.

At a time when humanity's relationship with nature is increasingly complex, Zaplaflora offers a vision of reconnection. His paintings remind us that nature is not separate from us but an essential part of our collective identity and spiritual well-being. Through color, symbolism, and creative freedom, he creates spaces of reflection, healing, and wonder.

Where Nature Dreams is more than an exhibition; it is an invitation to rediscover the invisible forces that connect all living things. In Zaplaflora's world, nature dreams, breathes, and speaks—and through his art, we are invited to listen.
