Chuck Close: The Monumental Face

Chuck Close (b. 1940) is known for his monumental, tightly cropped portraits—often depicting himself or those within his immediate circle. Working from photographic sources, he translates the image onto canvas through a meticulous, grid-based process, constructing each work square by square. What initially appears mechanical unfolds into something deeply human upon closer viewing, where abstraction and realism quietly intersect. While his early works emphasized tonal precision, his later practice introduced color, expanding both the visual and emotional range of his portraits.
