Carina Söderström

Carina Söderström is a Swedish visual artist whose work explores the connection between humanity and nature through themes of transformation, fragility, and renewal. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, to Finnish immigrant parents, she developed an early sensitivity to emotional expression, belonging, and the human condition. Söderström studied Art Science at Stockholm University and Art Therapy in St Albans, England, later working in the field of art therapy for many years. This experience deeply shaped her artistic voice, grounding it in empathy and introspection. In her forties, she transitioned fully into visual art, studying at Beckman’s School of Art and Design in Stockholm, where she refined her distinctive visual language. Her paintings are characterized by organic movement, atmospheric color, and a quiet emotional resonance that reflects life’s cyclical nature. In 2017, she was awarded The Tellervo Tikkanen Scholarship for the Swedish-Finnish Artist of the Year. Söderström has exhibited widely in Sweden and internationally, including in Milan, Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam, London, Basel, and Chile. Her works are part of both public and private collections and she is represented by Galleri Lorentzon, Van Gogh Art Gallery, Novum Investment, Tapiial Virtual, and ArtistArena.co.

Cycles of Being: The Fragile Balance Between Nature and the Human Spirit
By Sfumato

In “Cycles of Being,” Carina Söderström invites viewers into a contemplative space where nature and the human spirit merge into one continuous rhythm. Her paintings reveal a delicate balance between vulnerability and strength—between the quiet unfolding of life and the inevitable transformation that accompanies it. Drawing from her own lived experience as a woman, Söderström creates works that are both introspective and universal. Each brushstroke becomes a gesture of empathy, an echo of shared emotions that transcend boundaries. Her compositions, often characterized by organic movement and soft luminosity, evoke a sense of growth, motion, and renewal—mirroring the constant flow of life itself.

Söderström’s background in art therapy imbues her work with emotional intelligence and spiritual sensitivity. She approaches each canvas as an exploration of the psyche, where fragility is not weakness, but the very essence of beauty and existence. The human form and natural motifs intertwine fluidly, dissolving the line between the body and the landscape.

The artist describes her process as an act of “directing full attention and wholehearted emotion toward the atmosphere that shows—in nature, mind, and body.” In this way, her art becomes a meditation on connection—to oneself, to others, and to the cyclical rhythm of the universe.

Through “Cycles of Being,” Söderström celebrates the luminous interplay between creation and dissolution, presence and absence, silence and renewal. Her works remind us that to be fragile is also to be alive—and that within each ending lies the quiet beginning of something new.
